#Tanka 36 — Squashes

Kabocha squashes
grown football-sized overnight:
fresh soup at no cost.
On the supermarket shelves,
pricey glop packaged as soup!

    1. Hee, hee 🙂 I just love the word glop. I’m hoping that Monday will remain happy for me. It looks as if hurricane Ophelia is due to hit us in the next few hours! There’s a very weird sky outside — all orange and filled with Iberian dust trapped by the advancing cold front. It has looked like sunset since 2 o’clock this afternoon. Creepy. It would make a wonderful setting for a horror story!

    1. Thank you, Shey 🙂
PS I just finished your book today, whilst eating a rather extended breakfast, as I couldn’t possibly stop reading until I knew if they lived happily ever after, or not. Phew, I feel emotionally wrung out. Brilliant stuff. Will get around to a review, although have a bit of a backlog of reviews, but intend to get them written before NaNoWriMo starts xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

      1. Sarah, you just made my week. Truly. TRULY> I was not sure myself if they were gonna get there and that is the truth. They were so damned stubborn. An inch was something they would not let go of. WHen Stillmore saw that watch at the end, and he started, I thought ..what are you doing? Shut it., I am just so grateful for your words, don’t worry about another thing. You already made my week with the glop. Great damned word and so true about tinned ‘stuff.’ (Being polite here. Really want to start on these folks that lay into people relying on food banks for food. )

      2. Having once eaten nothing much other than tinned beans, macaroni cheese, bread and oranges for a couple of years in my twenties, I get very cross about those spoiled prats who don’t know the meaning of poor and who mouth off about people relying on food banks. On the other hand, I do know that some things people considered as luxuries in the past, are now thought of as necessities i.e. electronics. When I was living meagerly, I had no television, radio, let alone money for the electricity meter at times. But I’m guessing that the majority of people who use food bank are probably in a similar boat and genuinely can’t make ends meet, however hard they try. I’ve heard that some nurses and teachers fit into that bracket, which shows how bad their pay is now. When I trained as a nurse, I suddenly felt quite well off, with subsidised meals and a warm roof over my head in the nurses’ hostel! But those were the good old days when nurses trained on the job and didn’t have to accumulate uni debts. ….I’m sounding very ancient here. Time to get off my soapbox, methinks! I don’t want to spoil your week, Shey, having just made your week. I feel very blessed not to be ancient enough to have landed up in the workhouse once upon a time xxxxxxxxxxxxx

      3. Sarah, you get on your soap box. You are so right. I could join you right there re the level of student debt accumulated–often for the biggest Mickey Mouse courses in the galaxy– when life is hard enough. How many stage and screen actors and film theme composers does a country need? Oh wait… you can get a job in tele sales with a ton of debt at the end of it. Okay off the box now. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

      1. Have you signed up for NaNoWriMo yet? (Just giving you a nudge). When you have done so (that’s positive thinking), I’ll email you my username and my avatar, so you can find me, then we can encourage each other to be winners! 🙂

      2. I don’t know why I’m being so secretive about my NaNoWriMo username, considering that none of my blogging friends who are participating will find me there if I don’t post it publicly. Thus, I’ve put the official widget in my sidebar with my username “Wolery Wol”. There, Dale, you should be able to find me now, so at least we can be official buddies and encouragers of each other! If you can’t find me, go to the forums and scroll down until you arrive at the top listed thread on the SciFi writers one. Go to the last page, and you should find an introductory post from me, with a link to my profile. My post is probably rubbish, as nobody has responded, but hey, ho, I would rather have a select few buddies, or if I have too many I’ll spend all my time in the forum and not writing, which would rather defeat the object of the exercise!

    1. I haven’t made the soup yet but the squashes are lined up on a shelf, awaiting their fate! Since yesterday, a short shower of rain coated all the cars with red dust, after which the sun and the sky returned to normal 🙂

    1. I’m guessing that some people are too busy rather than too lazy to make homemade soup, let alone grow the produce. And some people just don’t like grappling with mud and weeds, or slaving over a hot stove, so maybe I’m being slightly tongue-in-cheek here, with my lesson!!!

  1. It really does make you feel all kinds of superior when you turn out a 100% home-garden-grown dish; huzzah!

And you changed your banner pic again – I love it; you look like an incarnation of the Green (wo)Man!

    1. I guess that some people might feel superior for eating packaged stuff, as they prefer the taste of it with all those yummy additives, colourings, and GM ingredients 😉 Or they just buy organic and their bills go through the roof!

I’m pleased you love my new banner. I liked the last one but felt that my picture dominated the page too much. This new one is more subtle and suitably quirky. If people want to see what I look like, they can go to my About page, as I’ve also removed my Gravatar and “about me” widget from the sidebar.
