Friday Fictioneers — Until Death Do Us Part

Conjoined at the hip, the Siamese twins Jane and Susan reached adolescence and argued about everything, from clothes to boys.

Aged nineteen, Jane fell in love with Christopher, a gardener, who relished nature in all its diversity. He told her, “I dig you, too.”

Susan complained that Christopher smelled of manure and grass cuttings, fining him £10 every time his hands strayed over her body’s side of the boundary.

When it came to the diamond cluster engagement ring — a family heirloom — Susan charged him rent for use of the left-hand Jane didn’t have, threatening to sell the ring if he defaulted.

      1. Poor you, having to put up with that illness of yours. It’s so hard to get into the groove with constant pain niggling at you. So glad that, despite all, you’re managing some creativity.

    1. I think Christopher will need a wheelbarrow full of them before Susan has finished punishing him!
So glad you enjoyed my take on the prompt. I very much liked the beauty and simplicity of your leaf photo.

    1. Thank you, Dale 🙂 Methinks that sometimes my imagination needs some degree of containment (or that’s what one of my teachers once said!). But I can’t switch it off. Even in my sleep, those dreams of mine are wildly strange and complex. Last night, I was busy battling aggressive aliens (yet again), this time by attempting to baffle them with poetry!

      1. Well methinks that teacher of yours should not have tried to hinder your creativity ~ she obviously did not succeed so that is a good thing! Don’t you dare switch it off!
Did you succeed in baffling them? Love it. Sometimes my dreams are so weird… I really should keep a pad and pen by my bedside so I can write them down as soon as possible. Five minutes after waking is too late. They’re gone!

  1. Very funny and imaginative. I chuckled with each reading. I read it from all three characters’ viewpoints. Too bad the twins couldn’t settle on the same man – threesomes are fun, though I guess constantly having to share the same man would not be – especially after having to share the same body all your life.

    1. Thank you, Randy 🙂 The mind boggles at the thought of Susan finding a husband, too, and him not getting on with Jane’s husband (or getting on with him a little too well!). There are many possibilities to imagine here.

  2. Dear Sarah,

If I really think about this one, my mind does somersaults. Suffice it to say, this was an über clever story with hundreds of possibilities. Well done. Brava!

    1. Dear Rochelle,
Yours wasn’t the only mind that did somersaults here. So did mine, when first I contemplated this story and decided what directions to take it in! And you’ve just taught me a new word. I’ve not heard “über” before and had to look it up.
      Thanks for your kind comment.
      All best wishes

    1. Thank you, Sherri 🙂 Imagine having a nightmare like Susan glued to you for a lifetime. It would be most unfortunate if she ended up needing psychiatric treatment, forcing Jane to go along with her to the unit and having to take lots of horrid medicines that wouldn’t suit her half of their body!
Is there a weird long story or novel lurking in here somewhere? I keep thinking of one scenario after another here, by way of dark comedy.
PS Mister didn’t like this story D:

      1. Oh what a terrible thought!!! But yes, I do believe a dark comedy is just waiting to be written by you Sarah. Altough you might have to keep it from Mister… 😉 xxxx

  3. Love your dark humour, as always, Sarah. And poor Jane, to be anchored to that . . . well, terrible sister would be the most benign term I can think of. Can you imagine the arguments these ladies would get into, when just the two of them were there? [Well, now, thanks to your storytelling, I can! :)]

    1. Thanks, Leigh 🙂 I was just wondering if the two sisters each have a dominant hand, as they have two brains between them. If so, can you imagine the number of black-eyes and various other bruises they’d inflict upon each other?

    1. Thank you, Andrea. I feel so well appreciated for originality in the world of blogging, but originality hasn’t helped me find a publisher as my work doesn’t fit any category … yet. On the other hand, it would be fun to found a category!
