ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
I’m overwhelmed. This is my eighth award, including my four stars for Blog of the Year Award, 2012. Before starting my blog in December 2011, I’d never received an award for anything other than one music medal at school for my piano playing, so I’m really touched by my fellow bloggers’ generosity.
This is my first speech ever, other than the ones delivered over the morning tea when my husband is too tired to knock me off my soap box. My areas of shyness are patchy. Yes, I can sing in front of people, but, no, I won’t talk to the audience about the music I’m performing. This is my husband’s job, as he loves giving speeches. In fact, the first time I saw him, he was giving an impromptu speech, and I thought, that man is really eccentric and funny. Little did I know he’d end up capturing my heart!
Although my biggest dream is to find a traditional publisher for my novels — especially my work-in-progress — sending out typescripts these days can be like casting them into a vacuüm. Publishers used to give feedback and encouragement. Nowadays, they send out standard rejections. This is most soul-destroying for a writer who’s had so many near misses in the past, with calls for full typescripts, followed by a 3-6 month wait, ending in rejection. The wonderful thing about blogging is its community spirit and responsiveness. When you post something, there’s feedback within minutes. Everybody needs encouragement to follow their dream. So I thank all of you for the love, support, and recognition you’ve given me.
I have chosen to break the rules and nominate sixteen bloggers for their exceptional posts, rather than fifteen. Some of these wonderful pieces of writing are fresh off the blogging press, and others are older, but have stuck in my mind.

Thanks Sarah, it did take a bit of time, I had to get up and stretch once or twice (lol) the list of bloggers (love ’em all) was so much longer, but I worried that the blog would simply be too long for readers. But it was a fun way to share. 🙂

I love how you have pulled out the pages that have earned this nomination.. what a fantastic selection. I am unable to play because of the parameters of my farmy blog but i am, still thrilled to bits. I recently did a writing course that I have come out of despondent and discouraged about writing at all, so this has been a glorious surprise, especially from a real writer as you are.. many thanks.. c

Don’t get discouraged about your writing. Out of interest, was the person who ran the course a published writer themselves, as there are a lot of people out there who run “how to” courses about things they can’t do themselves. Sometimes, with critiques, you have to put them away for a while to emotionally disengage yourself from them, and then get them out again and read them in a different light i.e. some helpful constructive criticism.
Even though you’re unable to play with the “Best Moment Award”, you still earned it, which makes you entitled to display the badge in your blog’s sidebar — rather like having a silver cup on your shelf!

yes she is a published author but it was through writers digest. She was very into Rules. The ones i have never been too good at and it took her three reviews before she could get my name right, however i am sure she is doing her best and my work may have been obtuse, Though when the reviewer asks you a question eg: What was in the orange bag? When you clearly state what was in the bag in the last revealing paragraph, well I was a little disappointed. I did need to be clearer i guess. but there you are. I love to write for the blog and maybe that is my best!! have a lovely day.. c

If you’re too clear, surely that denies your readers an opportunity to use their own intelligence? Also, spelling everything out often leads to too much “telling” and not enough “showing”. I’d go with your instincts and not be afraid to break a few rules. Don’t give up. Your blog demonstrates that you know how to write decent English. Go for it, I say 🙂
