Pursued by the Muses of prose and poetry

Music Passion

Courtesy of the inexhaustible Dolly, it’s time for October’s “Music passion” at This month, Carol at has chosen “morning” as her music passion. Thank you, to both lovely ladies, for getting the party rolling.

So here’s my music passion — the English Folk Song, Early One Morning, by that productive but elusive composer, Anon! There’s a great deal of academic argument about its date of composition. Some people claim it’s a Renaissance Song, but most academics think it originates from 1787, which was later in the Classical Music Period.

You can find more information about the song — including two different versions of its lyrics — at

Here, it is sung by the wonderful Greek Singer, Nana Mouskouri, who has sold more than two hundred million records worldwide.

wow, I just realized how long ago it is that I heard a song of Nana. Back in those days I was a fan of her. Amazing how times flies, Sarah. Thank you for sharing this song.
    Ciao, Francina

    • Would you believe it, she’s in her seventies, now?

When I first had to wear glasses, my husband cheered me up by telling me that I looked as good as Nana Mouskouri in them. Praise indeed 🙂

She has to be in her seventies, because I’m in my sixties. wow so hard to believe, Sarah. Oh my, I still have somewhere a photo wearing those glasses. They were in. Your hubby paid you a lovely compliment because she was a good looking girl.
        Ciao, Francina 🙂

  4. I love this. Nice selection, off the beaten path. Delightful discovery for me.

    • I’m so glad you liked the song. I love sourcing music that’s off the beaten path.

Eventually, when I surface for air from doing a million things at once, I’ll get around to writing the post I promised you about that ferocious aria sung by Cecilia Bartoli.

  5. Hi Sarah,

I actually own that LP of Nana singing songs from the British Isles. I also love (and own) Alfred Deller’s version of it. Great choice!

    • I seem to remember you mentioning Alfred Deller once before, when I posted a recording of the countertenor, Philippe Jaroussky on my blog. I’ve just had a peep on YouTube to see if the Alfred Deller version of ‘Early One Morning’ is there, but, sadly it is not.
